Cerro Toco ~ Full Day

The tour to Cerro Toco is a trekking experience in San Pedro de Atacama that takes you to the summit of an extinct volcano at 5,604 meters above sea level. It offers stunning panoramic views of the Andes and the Altiplano, as well as the opportunity to reach one of the most accessible peaks in the region.

Itinerary

The tour to Cerro Toco begins early in the morning with the pick-up of participants from their accommodations in San Pedro de Atacama. From there, the vehicle journey heads toward the starting point of the ascent, located at an altitude of approximately 5,000 meters. Along the way, the guide explains the geology of the area, as well as the Andean flora and fauna that inhabit the region.

Once at the trekking starting point, the guide gives a brief safety and acclimatization talk, as the hike takes place at high altitude, which can cause altitude sickness in some people. The ascent is of moderate difficulty and, although the distance is not very long (between 1 to 2 hours of uphill), the altitude can make it more challenging.

During the ascent, participants enjoy impressive views of the Atacama Desert, the Andes Mountains, and the imposing Licancabur volcano in the distance. As they climb, the volcanic landscape becomes more arid and rocky, but features fascinating geological formations.

Upon reaching the summit of Cerro Toco, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views that encompass the Atacama Salt Flat, the surrounding mountains, and volcanoes such as Juriques and Licancabur. On a clear day, the view is truly spectacular and provides a unique sense of having reached the top of a mountain in the Andes.

After resting and taking photographs at the summit, the group begins the descent, which is usually faster and less demanding. The tour concludes with a return to San Pedro de Atacama, where participants are dropped off at their accommodations, satisfied after completing an unforgettable experience in the heights of the Chilean desert.
