Astronomical Observatory ~ Full Day
San Pedro de Atacama is one of the best places in the world for astronomical observation due to its clear skies and minimal light pollution. The Astronomical Observatory Tour offers you the opportunity to discover the wonders of the universe from one of the driest deserts on the planet. Through powerful telescopes and with the guidance of expert astronomers, you will observe constellations, planets, nebulae, and galaxies. This experience will allow you to connect with the vastness of the cosmos in one of the most spectacular environments in Chile.
Itinerary
The tour begins with pick-up from your accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama at sunset, when the sky starts to darken and the first stars appear on the horizon. The journey to the Astronomical Observatory takes you outside the town, to an isolated area in the desert to avoid light pollution, ensuring the best observation conditions.
Upon arriving at the observatory, you will receive a brief introduction about the importance of the Atacama Desert for astronomy and an explanation about the night sky surrounding you. Your expert astronomy guides will show you how to read the sky, identifying constellations, visible planets, and the Milky Way with the naked eye.
The next part of the tour includes using powerful telescopes, through which you will be able to observe celestial objects that are invisible to the naked eye. Depending on the time of year, you will have the chance to see planets like Saturn with its rings, Jupiter and its moons, or Mars. You will also be able to appreciate distant stars, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. The guides will explain in detail what you are observing and provide fascinating facts about the universe, its formation, and the significance of each object in the cosmos.
Midway through the experience, there will be a break to enjoy a hot drink, as nights in the desert can be cold, even in summer. This is also a good time to ask the guides questions or simply admire the star-filled sky.
Finally, you will conclude the experience with an overview of the night sky, learning more about the history of astronomy and the contributions that Chile, with its international observatories, has made to science. After the observation, you will return to San Pedro de Atacama, arriving around midnight, having lived a magical experience under one of the most impressive skies in the world.
